1815 British State Lottery Broadside – June 28th Drawing
A rare and striking original State Lottery advertising broadside, printed by Evans & Ruffy of Watbrook and issued by Hodges & Co., Cornhill & Oxford Street, London. This genuine early-19th-century piece promotes a dramatic lottery offering six grand prizes of £20,000 a large sum for its era and details the full prize scheme for the draw held on Tuesday, June 28th.
The broadside features a charming period woodcut vignette at the top, depicting jubilant figures celebrating their imagined winnings. Printed on laid paper with characteristic age toning, crisp typography, and beautifully uneven deckled edges, it retains excellent legibility and period character.
Items relating to the old British State Lottery (abolished in 1826) are increasingly scarce, especially promotional broadsides in this condition. This example makes a superb display piece and a fascinating slice of Georgian-Regency social history perfect for collectors of lottery ephemera, printing history, or early British advertising.
