Victorian Joseph Haywood Scissors 1860–1889
This fine pair of 19th century steel scissors was crafted by renowned Sheffield cutler Joseph Haywood, active during the mid to late Victorian era. Dating between 1860 and 1889, they exemplify the high-quality workmanship that made Sheffield cutlery famous worldwide.
The scissors are stamped with Haywood’s makers mark, a clear sign of authentic period manufacture, and also bear the traditional “kettle” mark, a symbol historically associated with Sheffield's long established scissor making trade. Together, these marks confirm both origin and quality, making this pair a desirable item for collectors of antique tools, industrial heritage, or Victorian domestic objects.
Haywood was first listed in a directory in 1845 as a merchant and steel, file, edge-tool, saw, and cutlery manufacturer in Victoria Street. The workshops were soon moved to Glamorgan Works, Little Pond Street. Haywood traded as a ‘general merchant’ in cutlery, partly through a London office at No. 56 Holborn Viaduct. Pocket, sportsman’s, and budding knives were staple lines, though the firm also made table cutlery and plated dessert ware. Haywood’s corporate mark was a kettle, which had been granted in 1860.
