Large Flow Blue “Portrait” Platter – Empire Co, Stoke-on-Trent, 1912
A striking large blue and white Flow Blue platter produced by Empire Co. of Stoke-on-Trent in 1912, featuring the desirable “Portrait” pattern. The central reserve is decorated with a classical portrait medallion, framed by ornate borders, all beautifully rendered in rich cobalt blue with the characteristic soft “flow” into the glaze that collectors prize.
Flow Blue wares were produced in limited runs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and have become increasingly sought after for their dramatic appearance and decorative impact. The generous size of this platter makes it an excellent statement piece, whether displayed on a dresser, wall, or as part of a curated collection of blue and white ceramics.
The depth and variation of the blue tones, along with the gentle blurring typical of true Flow Blue, give this piece a wonderful sense of movement and depth, ensuring no two examples are exactly alike.
Condition: Very good antique condition with light age-related wear; minor surface marks consistent with age and use, slight chip that can be seen in the image.
