Copeland Late Spode Jasperware Jug with Pewter Lid
An elegant and finely crafted Copeland Late Spode Jasperware Jug, fitted with its original pewter lid, dating from 1891-1920. This piece exemplifies the artistry and technical mastery for which Spode—and later Copeland & Spode—became world renowned.
The jug is executed in classic jasperware, featuring a matte stoneware body of refined texture, beautifully applied with white neoclassical reliefs depicting mythological figures in fine detail. The subtle contrast of the pale bas-relief against the coloured ground is a hallmark of Spode’s craftsmanship, reflecting the neoclassical aesthetic that defined English ceramics of the period.
The pewter-mounted lid, original to the piece, adds both functional elegance and historical authenticity, completing the jug’s refined silhouette. The base bears the Copeland Late Spode mark, confirming its production during the transitional period of the Spode factory under the Copeland family—an era celebrated for technical excellence and artistic distinction.
Condition: Overall very good antique condition with crisp relief and original pewter lid intact. A fine hairline crack to the base is present but stable and does not detract from the jug’s display quality or historical appeal, can be seen in the last 3 images.
A superb example of 19th-century English jasperware, this jug would make a valuable addition to any collection of Spode or Copeland ceramics, showcasing the enduring elegance and craftsmanship of one of Britain’s most celebrated potteries.
