A highly unusual and beautifully decorated Japanese Meiji period ceramic teapot, featuring the distinctive textured sharkskin glaze associated with Japanese ceramics of the late 19th and early 20th century.
The rounded body is finished in a warm cream coloured granular glaze, providing a striking ground for the elaborate moriage decoration. Raised white slip forms an intricate botanical motif across the body, embellished with individually applied green enamel dots, while the upper section is decorated with hand painted cobalt blue scrolling and spot motifs.
The teapot retains its original domed cover with decorative knop, together with the original pierced ceramic interior strainer, an especially attractive feature of this example. The handle and spout continue the decorative scheme, giving the piece a remarkably cohesive appearance.
