A compelling piece of mid 20th century maritime military history.
This hand crafted, scratch built wooden scale model represents a World War II Royal Navy warship, finished in classic battleship grey with detailed deck fittings, gun turrets, bridge structure, and rigging wire.
The underside of the hull features a detailed period handwritten inscription in ink: "Presented to John MacKenzie, Senior Scientific Assistant, D.A.S.M. by Commander Mansell, R.N. late of 'H.M.S. Hardy' which was sunk in action at Tronhiem, Norway 1945."
Lieutenant Commander Victor George Doone Mansell was the First Lieutenant of HMS Hardy during the First Battle of Narvik on 10 April 1940. He played an important role after the destroyer was crippled by German fire and her bridge was devastated. While the ship was under heavy attack, Mansell took charge of the after guns and helped keep Hardy fighting. He also helped carry the badly wounded Chief Stoker Styles ashore after Hardy was deliberately run aground at Vidrek. Contemporary accounts describe Mansell and Stoker Petty Officer Carey carrying Styles to safety despite his severe wounds.
Associated with H.M.S. Hardy, the famous Royal Navy H-class destroyer leader that saw intense action during the Norwegian Campaign in 1940.
John MacKenzie, Senior Scientific Assistant at the D.A.S.M. (Directorate of Anti-Submarine Material).
