Early 19th Century Spode “Rosso Antico” Terracotta Hydra Jug – Hand-Painted, 1810–1820
A rare and highly decorative early 19th century Spode hydra jug in the sought-after Rosso Antico terracotta ground, beautifully enriched with fine hand-painted floral decoration in soft enamels. The warm, classical red body is delicately painted with scrolling leafy stems, blossoms, and small butterflies, creating a striking contrast against the rich matt terracotta surface.
The jug is formed in an elegant faceted profile with a flared spout and applied handle, the terminal modelled as a hydra or serpent mask, a playful and theatrical detail typical of Regency taste and neoclassical influence. Pieces of this type were produced as ornamental wares for display in the fashionable interiors of the period, inspired by ancient Roman red wares and the contemporary fascination with classical antiquity.
Spode’s Rosso Antico wares are increasingly scarce, particularly in figural or novelty forms such as this hydra jug, making this a particularly desirable example for collectors of early English ceramics.
Condition: Very good antique condition with light surface wear and minor firing imperfections consistent with age; no chips, cracks or restoration.
A striking and uncommon piece of Regency-era Spode, perfect as a cabinet piece or focal point in a period interior, and an excellent addition to any serious collection of early English pottery.
